Nature
ARTWORK
Growing up in Holland I passed the tulip fields bicycling to town. In Holland you are always surrounded by flowers. During the last two years living in New York City these vivid images came back to me. I turned to nature and drew inspiration from the traditional flower paintings that are so prevalent in many works from the Dutch golden age of painting. The images that I grew up with from Jan Bruegel, Ambrosius Bosschaert, Rachel Ruysch and others all the way up to Van Gogh’s Irisis are ingrained in me. In this body of work I explore this traditional subject matter and inject it with a new and fresh “funky” feel.
